Celebration of World Rabies Day 2023

On 31st October, 2024 was Kukur Tihar ( Festival of dogs) in Nepal. We celebrated the festival with great enthusiasm. The shelter was decorated with banners and flowers.

Kukur Tihar, also known as the "Day of Dogs," is a unique festival celebrated in Nepal as part of the five-day Hindu festival of Tihar (also known as Deepawali or Diwali). This day, dedicated specifically to honoring dogs, typically falls on the second day of Tihar, and it holds deep cultural and religious significance. In Hindu belief, dogs are considered the guardians of the afterlife, acting as messengers of Yama, the god of death. Kukur Tihar acknowledges their loyalty, companionship, and protective nature.

During this festival, dogs—both pets and strays—are adorned with vibrant flower garlands (called "mala") around their necks, symbolizing respect and reverence. A tika, a red or vermillion mark, is applied to their foreheads, signifying their sacred role and blessing them. Devotees offer a variety of treats and foods, such as meat, biscuits, and milk, as a gesture of appreciation and kindness.

Kukur Tihar is a heartwarming celebration that underscores the bond between humans and dogs, serving as a reminder of the importance of compassion towards animals. It has gained international attention for its unique approach to honoring dogs, inspiring people worldwide to reflect on their relationship with animals.
